Ashford is a purpose-built 10-bedded ward specifically for adult men with a learning disability who have been detained under the Mental Health Act.

Ashford has a 40+ strong multi-disciplinary team – comprising nurses, support workers, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, social workers, psychologists and psychiatrists. 

The unit includes: 10 en-suite bedrooms, a sensory room music and art rooms, fitness suite, a multi-faith room and a sunny garden space.

Family and friends are welcome to visit the unit. There is a family room that is used for visits or some patients may be able to meet with their visitors in the community.

If you would like to visit Ashford then this must be booked.  If you need a member of staff to be with you on the visit, we will need 24 hours’ notice before you arrive. Please see the information below about visiting times and how to book a visit.

Visiting times are:

Monday to Friday

  • 10:30am to 11:45am
  • 3:00pm to 4:45pm
  • 6pm to 8pm

Weekends and Bank Holidays

  • 10am to 11:45am
  • 2pm to 4:45pm
  • 6pm to 8pm

A member of staff will meet you and welcome you to the unit.

They will check all your paperwork is ok.

They will show you around the unit and where your room is.

All of your belongings will be searched. You will be searched as well. This is to make sure you don’t take anything onto the unit that you’re not allowed. We will make a list of all your belongings.

The Nurse will look after your medications and make sure you get them when you need them.

You will see a Doctor within the first day for a health check.

A member of staff will talk to you about what your Mental Health Act Section means and about the rules of Ashford.

Your care team will talk to you about your treatment and what you need to do while you are at Ashford.

You will have care plans to help you to understand and be involved in your care.

There are meetings that happen at Ashford to talk about your care and how you are doing. We will give you information about these meetings when you arrive.

You will have the opportunity to work with an advocate when you are at Ashford. An advocate is a person who will listen to you about the things you want and how you feel about being in hospital. They can help to put your point across and let people know what you want. The advocates don’t work for Southern Health, they work for you

 

You will be given a list of items which are not allowed in Ashford on arrival. If you have any of these items they will be held for you until they can be picked up. Please be aware that we have limited storage space at Ashford. If you bring too much we may ask you to pay for it to be stored elsewhere.

Your bedroom - You will have your own bedroom with a bed, shower, sink and space to put your beglongings. You will have a key to your room and staff will knock before they enter. 

Meal times - You don't have to pay for your meals. There will be a menu for you to choose from. There are four meals a day and drinks available at all times. 

Activities - We will support you to take part in activities both on and off the ward. You will do some of these activities on your own or with a member of staff. Some of these activities will be offered as a group (with the other service users at Ashford). Getting involved in activities will help you when it’s time to move on from
Ashford. Getting involved in activities will help you to get better, feel better and be safe in the community. We have Activity Coordinators who can help you chose activities.

Bus

There is a bus service which runs from Southampton to Tatchbury Mount (where Ashford is situated). Buses run two hourly services.

 

Parking

There is plenty of free parking available at the Tatchbury Mount site.
