Child Protection Team Southampton

Our Southampton Child Protection Team provide an acute medical service for children who may have experienced physical acute or ‘historic’ physical or sexual abuse or neglect.

Our admin team are office based, but our clinics take place in the Magnolia Centre at Southampton General Hospital, a purpose-built, child friendly suite.

About the service

Our community paediatricians provide a child protection medical service for children who may have experienced abuse. The service aims to focus on the physical and emotional health needs of children and young people with their carers.

Children and young people may attend pre-booked appointments at a clinic; in some circumstances where there are recent signs or symptoms they may be seen urgently.

Our paediatricians work closely with the specialist nursing team and, where necessary, with colleagues from the police and social services to ensure the best possible health care is provided.

The service consists of community paediatricians and specialist nurses.

Callers seeking advice about a non-urgent situation will be called back by a specialist nurse, or the named or designated doctor.

Accessing the service

Our Southampton Child Protection Team accept phone referrals from police, social care and health professionals.

Referral criteria

  • Children and young people aged 0-16 years (19 if attending a special school or with other learning difficulties, or already known to the Children in Care team), and who are registered with a GP in the Southampton or South West Hampshire area.
  • Acute referrals are made via the child protection service hotline number: 0300 123 6662
  • Social Services or police requesting a medical assessment will be asked to complete a brief referral form before the specialist nurse or on-call doctor calls back.
