Local NHS Trust, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, has announced the first winners of its CARE Awards, a brand-new monthly staff awards scheme, just in time to add a little sparkle to the winners’ festive season.
Named after the Trust’s values - Compassion, Accountability, Respect and Excellence - the scheme allows staff to formally recognise a team, colleague or leader who live and breathe the values in their work with patients, staff and partners.
After receiving over 200 nominations in the first month of the new awards, an independent judging panel had the tricky task of narrowing down the entries to only three winners.
Judy Hales, North i2i Team Leader, was awarded the ‘Colleague of the Month’ award for the invaluable and life-changing impact she has made empowering young people and their families.
Her nominating colleagues explained: “Judy’s deep understanding of communication barriers allows her to facilitate connection and support for young people, allowing them to express themselves when traditional methods might fail. She is knowledgeable, approachable, enthusiastic, and inspiring…For many, Judy's support has been life-changing, particularly in allowing them to communicate when they otherwise might not have been able to.”
Solent GP Surgery took home the first ‘Team of the Month’ award and were recognised for their work with unpaid carers.
Andrew Strevens, Chief Integration Officer for Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare and panel judge commented: “We unanimously agreed that Solent GP Surgery were the worthy winners - for being unsung heroes and for the positive impact they make on patients, especially those who need extra support. They go above and beyond daily, and it doesn’t go unnoticed.”
The final award, ‘Leader of the Month’, was awarded to Modern Matron, Emma Jones.
“Emma has been instrumental in the development and growth of the primary care mental health service in Southampton over the last three years. This was Emma's first matron-level leadership role, and she has been incredible. The service has gone from strength to strength with Emma's leadership and support. There has also been considerable work in linking with other services across the healthcare system, to ensure we can support patients at the right place and at the right time.”
When asked about the judging panel, Andrew added: “It has been a real honour to be part of the first official judging panel for the CARE Awards, and I cannot wait to read more incredible nominations in the months to come.”
