Today, Friday 21 February, is Mental Health Nurses' Day. Darren Humphrey, Director of Quality and Professions, shares why he became a mental health nurse.
I became a mental health nurse as a result of my early experiences within the military. Having served in operations from the age of 18, I had witnessed fist hand the impact of conflict on peoples mental health. We lost a very close colleague whilst away on ship to suicide, and it was from that point on I knew I wanted to help others. With a strong nursing background and amazing role models of my mum and others, I transferred from being a weapons engineer in the Royal Navy, to a mental health nurse in the navy.
I served a total of 30 years in the Royal Navy, 18 of which was as a mental health nurse. They were 18 incredible years in the support of military personnel and the promotion of mental health.
I am incredibly proud to be a mental health nurse.
