Children’s Orthotic Service

About the service

The children's orthotic service can assess to see if a mechanical device, such as a splint or special footwear, can keep a child mobile, reduce pain, or prevent any deformity in their limbs or body.  

What we do

An Orthotist will measure the part of the body that the child needs to have orthoses for and will decide on the best treatment. Orthoses or devices can be ordered from specialist providers or made specifically to suit the individual. The fitting is done at a later appointment once the item has arrived.

Any orthoses must then be worn as instructed and if there any problem with the orthoses such as rubbing, pain, broken or damaged, too small or if the child is refusing to wear it, the parent or carer can contact the enquiry service to ask for help or a review appointment.

Referral criteria: 

• Children between 0 – 17 years (0 – 19 if attending Cedar or Rosewood School) in Southampton City Primary Care Trust area or the following areas of NHS Hampshire New Forest area (excluding Ringwood and Fordingbridge), Test Valley South and Eastleigh Southern Parishes.
• Children with neurological conditions which affects their mobility.
• Children with postural management needs.
• Children with a potential to develop contractures of tissue which may affect their range of joint movements
