Urgent Treatment Centres

Alert

Due to an equipment failure over the weekend, there are currently no x-ray facilities at Petersfield Community Hospital. This affects both the outpatient department and the Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC). Petersfield UTC remains open.

If you are a Petersfield outpatient, you will be contacted to rearrange your X-ray appointment.

We are working with our partners to automatically redirect people to the next nearest available UTC so everyone with x-ray requirements will be treated as usual according to their need.

UTCs available for walk-ins and x-rays are:

  • Practice Plus Group, Milton Road, Portsmouth PO3 6DW
  • Gosport War Memorial Hospital, Bury Road, PO12 3PW.

About the service

The Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC) is an alternative to the emergency department for both children and adults. It provides treatment for minor injuries and illnesses that are urgent but not life threatening.

Our UTC at Petersfield Community Hospital treats a wide-range of conditions, and is open 12 hours a day, every day, all year round, from 8am to 8pm(X-ray department is open 7 days a week 9am to 4pm). The opening times have been based on local need.

What we do

Examples of what can be seen and treated at the UTC include:

  • Strains and sprains
  • Suspected broken limbs
  • Minor head injuries
  • Minor scalds and burns
  • Skin infections and rashes
  • Eye problems
  • Feverish illness in adults
  • Feverish illness in children
  • Abdominal pain
  • Emergency contraception

Accessing the service

Patients are encouraged to call NHS 111 before arriving at the Urgent Treatment Centre as they will be able to take note of your symptoms and problems and then let you know what service will be to help you. This could range from self-care, seeing a pharmacist, helping you make an appointment within primary care, directing you to the UTC or the emergency department.

If you need to be seen at the Urgent Treatment Centre then please book an appointment via NHS 111 as this will reduce the time you will have to wait on site to be seen. Patients who go directly to the centre without calling 111 will be clinically assessed by a triage nurse or other health professional and would only be prioritised for treatment over pre-booked appointments where this is clinically necessary – so it makes sense to book via 111 before you go.
