About the service

Our Radiology service plays a vital role in diagnosing, monitoring and guiding treatment for a wide range of conditions.

The team provides imaging such as X-rays, MRI, CT, ultrasound, DEXA scans and fluoroscopy, helping clinicians see inside the body and understand what’s happening beneath the surface.

Supporting both inpatients and outpatients, this work helps shape care decisions and improve outcomes.

Working in the service

The team supports patients at every stage of their healthcare journey - from first investigations through to ongoing monitoring and treatment.

Day to day, they carry out a wide range of imaging, from quick routine exams to more complex and specialist scans. They may also support procedures in theatre and on occasion, carry out dental imaging.

Working closely with patients, the team plays an important role in helping people feel informed, comfortable and reassured - often at times when they may feel anxious or uncertain.

Roles in the service

Radiology is a diverse, multidisciplinary team made up of clinical, technical and support roles: 

• Radiographers carry out imaging such as X-rays, CT and MRI scans
• Sonographers specialise in ultrasound imaging
• DEXA technicians perform bone density scans
• Consultant Radiologists interpret images and support diagnosis
• Department assistants support patient flow and clinical activity
• Administrative colleagues manage bookings, records and patient communication

We also work closely with other healthcare professionals as part of wider care teams to ensure patients receive the right diagnosis and treatment.

Development and career opportunities

Radiography is a registered Allied Health Profession, with routes into the career through a degree or degree apprenticeship.

There are opportunities to develop specialist interests in areas such as MRI, CT, ultrasound, interventional and reporting radiography, as well as in education, research or leadership.

Technical and support roles also offer valuable experience in a clinical setting, with opportunities to build practical skills and gain patient-facing experience.
