Orthotics and Prosthetics

About the service

Our Orthotics and Prosthetics service helps people move more comfortably, reduce pain and get the most out of daily life.

Based at St Mary’s Hospital in Newport, the team runs mainly outpatient clinics, supporting people who need expert assessment, tailored devices and specialist care.

From insoles, spinal supports and leg braces to specialist footwear and upper and lower limb prostheses, they provide practical solutions that make a difference to individuals day to day lives.

Working in the service

The team support people with a wide range of needs - from short-term injuries to long-term conditions.

With orthotics, the team assesses and fit devices such as splints, insoles, shoe adaptations, leg braces, orthopaedic footwear, spinal supports and wigs to improve movement and reduce discomfort.

With prosthetics, the service provides and maintains artificial limbs, supporting patients throughout their journey.

No two days are the same. One day you might be helping someone walk more comfortably; the next, supporting a patient to get back to the activities they love, like golf, running or swimming.

Roles in the service

Orthotics and Prosthetics is made up of a diverse team of clinical, technical and support staff working together to deliver high-quality care.

  • Prosthetists and Orthotists assess patients and design and fit devices
  • Technicians manufacture, adjust and repair equipment
  • Administrative and support colleagues coordinate clinics and patient contact

They also work closely with other healthcare professionals as part of wider multidisciplinary teams.

What makes this work rewarding

Working in Orthotics and Prosthetics means seeing the difference you make, every single day.
