Careers for Young People
Careers for Young People (CfYP) is a programme for young people aged 16 to 25 on the Isle of Wight and in Portsmouth, offering entry-level opportunities through a structured two-year pathway delivered in partnership with HTP Apprenticeship College.
Apprenticeships run across various sectors like Business Admin, Hospitality, Health & Social Care and Management, and the programme includes a 4 to 6 month pre-apprenticeship, followed by an 18-month apprenticeship.
CfYP is delivered in partnership with Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Integrated Care Board, HTP Apprenticeship College, Isle of Wight Council, Isle of Wight NHS Trust, and Tower House GP Surgery.
The Pre-Apprenticeship is a four to six month programme. It comprises of a comprehensive induction, and then depending on the subject area:
- Clinical learners will rotate around Allied Health Professions, Community Nursing and Mental Health placements, spending 2 weeks (or 6 working days) in each area
- Business learners will rotate around multiple administrative teams
- Estates learners will rotate around various teams including catering, housekeeping and stores
In addition to the above, HTP Apprenticeship College will support learners with overarching employability skills development and the Care Certificate during this time, as well as any Maths and English qualifications as required.
After successful completion of the Pre-Apprenticeship, learners move onto an 18-month Apprenticeship.
During this time, Apprentices are employed by the Trust on a 'fixed term contract', and would work a 35-hour week, of which 7 hours of this time is protected for outside teaching.
During this time, Apprentices will be observed by HTP during their work, and they will work towards either:
- Level 2 Adult Care Worker
- Level 3 Lead Adult Care Worker
- Level 2 Customer Service
- Level 3 Business Administration
Apprentices will also be supported with their applications for substantive posts, towards the end of their fixed-term contract. Please note, the qualifications offered may vary depending on the needs of participating learners and teams supporting the Apprentices.
Trust wide Apprenticeships
Apprenticeships are available to colleagues across the Trust once they have joined the organisation, offering a structured route to develop skills, gain recognised qualifications and progress their careers.
This can be a great route for colleagues who join the organisation in entry-level or support roles and want to develop their skills whilst deciding on their longer-term career direction. Our in-house Talent and Career Planning Team works with a wide range of training providers to support staff across clinical and non-clinical roles, and we currently, have almost 400 colleagues who are undertaking an apprenticeship, spanning 46 different programmes.
Some Apprenticeship opportunities are available through external recruitment, allowing individuals to join the Trust directly into an Apprenticeship role. These vacancies provide an alternative entry route into the organisation, combining paid employment with an Apprenticeship programme.
Popular programmes include:
- Registered Nurse Degree Apprenticeships in Adult and Mental Health Nursing
- Occupational Therapy
- Business Administration
- Senior Healthcare Support Worker
Some of our more bespoke programmes include:
- Professional Accounting
- Learning and Skills Mentoring
- Data Protection and Information Governance
Once you've started working, get in touch with our Talent and Career Planning Team and they'll be able to provide you with more information on the programmes available.
