Your voice, your NHS: shaping care together through co production and equity

Building better healthcare together - where every voice is heard, valued and shapes the care we all receive.

Co-production and equitable care are central to building a more effective, inclusive NHS. Together, they move healthcare beyond traditional models - where services are designed for people - towards a partnership approach, where services are designed with them. This means every voice matters, and every experience counts.

Being a Trust member is a simple but powerful way to get involved. Membership is free and voluntary, but it provides a formal voice in how the organisation operates. Members receive updates, attend meetings, ask questions, and contribute to discussions about future plans. They can also vote for or stand as Governors, who represent members and hold the Trust Board to account. It’s not just about being informed - it’s about being heard and making a difference.

Co-production builds on this foundation. It is not just about asking for feedback on decisions that have already been made, but about working in equal partnership from the very beginning. Patients, carers, communities and professionals share power, knowledge and responsibility to identify priorities, design services and evaluate outcomes together. Your voice helps shape the future of care from the very start.

At the same time, the principle of equitable care reminds us that treating everyone the same does not always lead to fair outcomes. People start from different circumstances, influenced by factors such as age, disability, income, ethnicity and access to resources. Equity means recognising these differences and providing the additional support some people need. Because being heard also means being understood.

Co-production and equity are closely linked. Co-production is one of the most effective ways to achieve equitable care because it brings those most affected by inequalities into the decision-making process. Instead of relying on assumptions, services are shaped by real experiences. When people are truly listened to, services work better for everyone. Members play a crucial role here, acting as a bridge between the Trust and the community, ensuring diverse voices are represented and heard.

In practice, members can join co-production groups, steering committees and project teams, where they contribute as equal partners rather than passive participants. They help design services that better reflect people’s lives, improve patient satisfaction, and reduce waste by focusing resources on what truly matters. Real change happens when people are not just consulted, but empowered. Governors and community leaders further strengthen this by ensuring organisations actively involve diverse communities and address inequalities.

Ultimately, combining Trust membership, co-production and a focus on equity creates a healthcare system that is more responsive, compassionate and sustainable. It ensures that services are grounded in the realities of people’s lives. Because the best healthcare is built together, not delivered alone.

In essence, membership gives you a seat at the table, while co-production and equity ensure every voice at that table counts—and leads to meaningful change. Your voice doesn’t just matter - it shapes the NHS of tomorrow.
