People walking along Castlehold Lane in Newport, Isle of Wight, may have noticed something bright and eye-catching appearing on the side of the Newport Health and Wellbeing Centre in recent days.
A life-size reproduction of Vincent van Gogh’s famous Sunflowers painting is now on display as part of the National Gallery’s Art on Your Doorstep trail, which has transformed Newport into an open-air gallery featuring 18 famous artworks across the town.
Newport is one of just seven locations across the UK chosen to host the project in 2026, making it a proud moment for the town and the wider Island community.
The painting was chosen by staff at the centre, who were given a choice between Sunflowers and Van Gogh’s Chair.
For many, Sunflowers felt like the perfect fit.
Known for its warmth, colour and sense of positivity, the artwork now sits alongside a building dedicated to supporting people’s mental health, wellbeing and community care right in the heart of Newport.
The Newport Health and Wellbeing Centre was created to bring health and wellbeing services closer to the community, making support more visible, accessible and connected within the town centre. The arrival of Sunflowers adds another layer to that, creating a space that sparks conversation, curiosity and reflection for people passing by each day.
The Art on Your Doorstep trail is a special collaboration between Newport and the National Gallery, designed to bring world-famous artworks into everyday spaces across Newport and encourage people to see the town in a new way.
Lucy Abel, Clinical Director for the Isle of Wight Division at Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, said:
“We’re really pleased to see Sunflowers on display at Newport Health and Wellbeing Centre. It is such a recognisable and uplifting piece of art, and it feels especially meaningful in a setting focused on mental health and wellbeing.
“Our centre was designed to bring community health and wellbeing into the heart of Newport, so having this artwork on the side of our building in Castlehold Lane feels very fitting. It is lovely to be part of something that encourages people to stop, look differently at the town around them and hopefully start conversations too.
“To have Newport selected as one of only seven locations in the UK to host the trail is something really special and we are proud to be part of it.”
The wider Art on Your Doorstep trail has been designed to encourage people to explore Newport in a new way, discovering places they may not usually visit and creating links between the artwork and the locations where they are displayed.
Van Gogh’s work is often connected with conversations around emotion, creativity and mental wellbeing, making Sunflowers a particularly fitting addition to the trail.
The exhibition will remain in Newport until October and is free for everyone to enjoy.
