Thousands benefit from First Contact Practitioner appointments in Primary Care

26 May 2026

Each year, thousands of people across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight receive care from First Contact Practitioners (FCPs) at their local GP surgery.

FCPs are experienced physiotherapists with the advanced skills to assess, diagnose and recommend appropriate treatment or referral for musculoskeletal (MSK) problems on a patient’s first contact with the NHS.

One of those who benefitted from this service is Linda Vacher. She contacted her GP surgery because pain in her left leg and hip was disturbing her sleep.

She was referred to Ollie, a Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust FCP, at her GP Surgery.

Ollie.jpg“My experience with Ollie was extremely good,” she said. “I was pleased that he had tested the amount of movement and strength I had in my legs and hips. He was very good at explaining, and he kept me included in the discussions, rather than just telling me what he thought.”

FCPs play a crucial role in improving access to appropriate care for patients with MSK issues, improving the patient journey from start to finish. Between April 2025 and March 2026, over 35,000 consultations took place.

“I’ve since seen another clinician and have now got an appointment for an MRI in Southampton. I could not be more pleased with the help I have received,” Linda said.

Sally Frost, Associate Director of MSK at Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, said: “The FCP Service has delivered significant achievements, bringing MSK expertise directly into Primary Care. By enabling patients to access expert musculoskeletal assessment and advice much earlier in their journey, the service has improved patient experience, supported people to manage their MSK presentations more effectively, and reduced delays in care.

“In addition, the FCP model has created new opportunities for the MSK workforce to develop and expand their skills within the Primary Care environment, helping to strengthen professional pathways and elevate the profile of MSK services across the system.”

FCPs can help with a wide range of MSK conditions, including:

  • All soft tissue injuries – sprains, strains or sports injuries

  • Arthritis

  • Possible problems with muscles, ligaments, tendons or bones

  • Spinal pain

  • Spinal-related pain in arms or legs, including nerve symptoms

  • Post-orthopaedic surgery.

The service is widely available across Hampshire and Isle of Wight. To access the service, patients should enquire with their local GP surgery.
