‘Mental health is very close to my heart’ – NHS colleague prepares to run London marathon

11 March 2026

An NHS colleague from Portsmouth is preparing to take on one of the world’s most famous races as part of Team Brighterway at the 2026 TCS London Marathon.

Amber, who works for Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, will join fellow NHS colleagues running the 26.2-mile challenge this April to raise vital funds for Brighterway - the Trust’s official charity.

Brighterway supports projects that enhance patient care, improve wellbeing and create better experiences for patients, staff and hospital environments across the Trust.

Amber first discovered her love of running in 2020 after completing the Couch to 5K programme. Since then, she has taken part in a number of events including the Great South Run and Race for Life - but the London Marathon will be her biggest challenge yet.

“Mental health is very close to my heart,” Amber said. “Raising money for this amazing charity and hopefully being able to make a difference is great.”

Training through the winter months has not always been easy, but Amber says the support around her has made the journey enjoyable.

“It has been challenging at times, especially training in winter, but I am so grateful that I have friends and family who also enjoy running and are supporting me with my training,” she said. “I am enjoying it.”

Amber is dedicating her marathon run to the people closest to her and to patients she supports through her work.

“I’m definitely dedicating this to my amazing family and all the patients at Elmleigh” she said.

Through months of preparation, Amber says marathon training has also given her a renewed sense of appreciation for her own health and resilience.

“I feel very inspired and grateful that my body is allowing me to do all this training and soon a marathon,” she said.

Amber is one of four NHS colleagues representing Brighterway at this year’s London Marathon. Alongside their demanding NHS roles, the team has been training for months - showing the same dedication, resilience and compassion they bring to their work every day.

Amber added: “I just wanted to say a huge thank you to Brighterway for giving me this opportunity.”
