CQC rates our Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC) at Petersfield Community Hospital ‘Good’
Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is pleased to announce that the Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC) at Petersfield Community Hospital has been rated ‘Good’ overall by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).
The UTC was also rated Good in every domain: Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive and Well-Led. The inspection took place in September 2025 and the report was published in February 2026.
This strong result reflects the work of our urgent care teams and the trust’s continued focus on high-quality, safe and compassionate care for our communities.
Every day, Petersfield UTC supports hundreds of people who need urgent medical attention. Designed to ease pressure on Emergency Departments (ED), the UTC treats a wide range of urgent, non life threatening conditions such as sprains, suspected fractures, burns, minor head injuries, infections, rashes, wound care and urgent medication needs. By offering fast, expert care close to home, Petersfield UTC helps people avoid long waits in ED, ensuring patients receive timely support when they need it most, and allows ED teams to focus on the most critically unwell patients.
In their report, the CQC praised several aspects of care and service delivery, including:
• Patients consistently reported positive experiences and praised staff for their kindness, dignity and respect.
• The service demonstrated strong clinical practice, with safe assessments, effective treatments and clear personalised care plans.
• Staff were described as skilled, compassionate and committed, with visible and supportive leadership.
• The UTC has responded to growing local demand, increasing staff levels and strengthening pathways with other health and care services.
• A strong culture of learning, safety and continuous improvement was evident throughout the service.
The CQC also highlighted minor improvements needed around equipment audits and mandatory training. These actions are already underway.
The UTC is also helping support the wider system response following the fire at University Hospital Southampton.
Our urgent care teams at Petersfield and across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight have extended capacity and continue to see and treat patients safely during this period of significant system pressure.

By using the most appropriate service, including UTCs and NHS 111, the public can help us ensure that the right care is available quickly for those who need it, and continue to allow hospital emergency departments to focus on those with the most serious conditions.
