Celebrate Maternal Mental Health Week with your local health visiting service

22 April 2026

Join Hampshire Healthy Families on a ‘Ready Steady Walk’ to celebrate Maternal Mental Health Week 4-10 May 2026.

Walks are taking place all over Hampshire throughout the week (excluding bank holiday Monday) and are open to everyone in the family. From Aldershot to Andover, Winchester to Waterlooville, all the routes are fully accessible, pushchair friendly and will be taking place come rain or shine.

The free walks are led by a Hampshire Healthy Families volunteer and will be attended by staff from your local health visiting team.

Chris, a volunteer lead walker for the Barton-on-Sea route said: “People who may be feeling anxious to come along will find the group members friendly and supportive. We all know what it is like to be a new parent and how important it is to have contact with other adults and to share experiences. This is a chance to meet other people in the same position, to be able to talk about concerns, celebrate milestones and share what we discover about our children.

“We all get the benefit of fresh air, exercise, lovely views and good company. Time at the café gives us a chance to relax and chat about all sorts of things. As a volunteer I feel valued and appreciated by the members. I can answer their queries, offer support or point them in the right direction to get help if they need it.”

This year’s theme is ‘a decade of voices’. The Perinatal Mental Health Partnership, who founded the awareness week, stated: “Our survey this year overwhelmingly showed how women do not feel listened to with regards to their mental health. We want to highlight the power of women knowing it is ok to express their needs, feelings, and experiences.”

Estelle Andrews, Specialist Health Visitor for Perinatal Mental Health, said: “Becoming a new mum can bring a wide range of emotions, some positive and some more challenging.  Many of these feelings are a normal part of adjusting to such a significant life change. At times, these emotions may feel particularly overwhelming and may begin to affect your daily life.

“It’s important to remember that you don’t have to manage these feelings on your own. Talking to someone you trust or reaching out for support can make a real difference. Your health visitor is here to listen and help you explore the support options available to you.”
