Brighterway is the charity that supports Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.
Our purpose is simple: to make life brighter for the people who use local NHS community and mental health services - and for the incredible staff who care for them. Every penny we fundraise goes towards things the NHS alone can’t provide. These 'extras' aren’t luxuries - they’re the things that help people feel calmer, recover well, stay connected, and live more independently.
From peaceful therapeutic spaces and creative activities, to specialist equipment, wellbeing projects and community initiatives, we focus on the touches that bring comfort, dignity, joy and hope into everyday care. Thanks to generous donations, passionate fundraisers and dedicated volunteers, we can make meaningful improvements that truly transform experiences for patients, families, carers and staff.

While each project is different, they all share a common aim: to improve quality of life, wellbeing, and independence over and above what is possible through government NHS funding alone. This might include enhancing therapeutic environments, supporting innovative wellbeing initiatives, or funding equipment and resources that make a real difference to people’s lives.

Brighterway began with a simple belief: people deserve more than the basics. They deserve comfort, connection, joy and moments that brighten their day, especially during difficult times. Over the years, we’ve grown from supporting small local projects to becoming a charity that brings light and hope to people across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.
During 2022/2023, the charity received an amazing £130,000 in donations and grants from individuals, companies, NHS Charities Together and our League of Friends. Every contribution helped us fund projects that made real differences - calming outdoor spaces, creative sessions, wellbeing activities, specialist equipment, and simple comforts that help people feel more at home.
As we moved into 2023/2024, our focus turned to building more capacity within NHS services so they could go above and beyond what is expected. We worked closely with patients, families, carers and staff to identify what truly matters and shape projects that help people lead the best life they can.
In 2024/2025, a major transformation took place across local healthcare. Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust and Solent NHS Trust formally merged to create the new Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, bringing community, mental health and learning disability services together to strengthen support and provide more consistent, joined‑up care for people across the region.
For Brighterway, this merger meant becoming part of a larger, more connected family - allowing us to reach further, fund more wellbeing projects, and support even more people across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.
Looking ahead to 2026/2027, our focus is on supporting our teams so they can continue supporting our communities, placing a strong emphasis on the wellbeing of our staff. We know that when our teams feel valued, supported and cared for, they are better able to bring comfort, connection and hope to the people we serve. This commitment will guide our projects, our partnerships and the way we invest in our NHS community over the coming years.
What began as a handful of local ideas has grown into a wide network of wellbeing initiatives that touch thousands of lives every year. And through every donation and every project, our purpose stays the same: to bring light, colour and comfort to the people who need it most.
